Skinny potato program aims to help the Russet market

“We are extremely excited about the launch of our new Skinny potato product this coming January,” says Scott McDulin - Vice President of Marketing/Retail Sales with Schmieding Produce. After New Year, everybody wants to focus on health. According to research from PaleoLeap, the average weight gain between Thanksgiving and Christmas is 3.5 pounds, but overweight people gain an average of 5 to 10 pounds during this time frame. January is a key month for Americans to lose weight. “We think the January timeframe is perfect since people are actively looking for diet friendly items to help with nutritional meal planning. The Skinny potato is a 100-calorie potato that offers moms an opportunity to use smart portion control while keeping potatoes as part of a healthy diet,” mentioned McDulin.     100-calorie packs Nowadays, the supermarkets are filled with 100-calorie packs of yogurt, pretzels, popcorn, snacks, etc. “Nabisco recently launched 100-calorie packs of Oreo’s,” shared McDulin. “It shows that the 100-calorie measurement resonates with today’s consumers so we want to add the same controlled calorie serving to the potato segment.”   The serving size for this Non-GMO potato is 4.8 oz. or 135g, which equates to 100-calories. “Since it’s a natural ...

Schmieding’s 80th signifies a return to form

After 79 years of business, Schmieding Produce Co. LLC was purchased by Woerner Holdings in April of 2015. But this isn’t your standard story of a family-owned business selling out. Instead, the change in leadership has refocused the company on pursuing aggressive growth without sacrificing the values of honesty and integrity on which it was built. The relationship between the Woerner and Schmieding families goes back to the 1960’s, when the Woerner family farm supplied produce to Schmieding’s to ship. Lester Woerner, president of Schmieding and chairman of Woerner Holdings, bought Schmieding with a purpose: to create a platform to grow produce, agricultural sales and marketing business. “The main objective is building a bridge between family farms across the country to the marketplace, and Schmieding is our bridge,” said Woerner. In the year since it was purchased, Schmieding has worked to increase its grower base and the scope of its logistics operations, and has aggressively pursued growth and expansion. “We’ve gotten Schmieding’s hands a little dirtier,” Woerner said, referencing to several new land acquisitions in southern Florida and the San Luis Valley in Colorado. Schmieding is actively seeking opportunities to invest in businesses and land that will spur even more ...

Potatoes in Smaller Size Packaging Increasingly Popular

So far, the 2016 potato crop in the US looks to be similar to last year. “Plantings are down slightly compared to last year, but higher yields are expected to make for similar supplies,” says Scott McDulin- Vice President of Marketing/Retail Sales with Schmieding Produce. In August, Texas will start harvesting its Russet potatoes, but the majority of US potatoes will be harvested between late September and the end of October from Idaho, Colorado, Wisconsin and Washington.   Opportunities in specialty segment Specialty potatoes continue to outpace other varieties of US potato consumption. “This is the fastest growing segment and it is most profitable as well,” mentioned McDulin. “However, today it only represents 3 percent of all potato sales in the US.” Specialty potatoes come in smaller packs and consumers are willing to pay a higher price. The organic potato category is growing as well. Last year, sales were up 12 percent, but organic potatoes represent only 4 percent of all US potato sales. “Organic potatoes are lagging behind other produce categories due to consumer demand and current supply limitations,” according to McDulin.     Russet sales down Consumption of Russet potatoes on the other hand has been hurt in ...
